The Salt Rock Spearfishing Club
The Club was started out of the desire to get the local diving crew together; it just seemed like a logical thing to do. Over the years it has become more than just a group of mates getting together for a good time and share dive stories. It has become an open door for the new guys to find their feet in what is normally a closed community.
There is so much we can learn from each other, and just when you think you know something there is a new challenge in front of you pushing your limits. Then you see some of the guys who started out in the club and now are accomplished divers leading & showing others the way.
So at the end of the day it’s about the mates, good times & better diving ...that’s what we are about!
We live in a special place where it is almost impossible not get involved in what goes on in the ocean. For many of us we grew up surfing and fishing, and our love for the sea runs deep.
Spearfishing posses an alternative to the ol drag a bait around the ocean and maybe catch something. You become intimately involved in the sea - almost part of its members, learning the nuances’ and flows of the very life that makes it amazing. You are not just hunting ... you are living!
Home for the Salty Divers is the "Dolphin Coast" on the east coast of South Africa. Our small stretch runs basically from the Tongaat River in the south to the Tugela River up north. We have a couple of small reefs on our doorstep that are some of the most amazing places on earth. And as the old saying goes ‘Home is where the heart is’ this rings so true for many of us. We have grown up diving here, seen amazing things, had hours of un-measureable pleasure and extreme challenges. Its no wonder we own this place in our hearts.
When you dive the same spots day in and day out, you notice the slightest impact on the environment. Its easy to see the fickleness of an ecosystem and how easily it is disturbed by intervention. We have a unique and powerful skill that demands that we steward this gift well, we have the ability to destroy or to protect. Spearfishing is acknowledged as the most conservative means of harvesting fish.... but only in the hands of good stewards!!The law has put parameters in place that are based on ‘Sustainable Utilisation’ For us this is the absolute bare minimum and not a limit to be reached. Basically we don’t promote ‘catching your limit’ but ‘Limiting your Catch’
